When To Pack For A Move

Everyone knows that moving house can be a long process. You can get stuck in housing chains, need to move asap due to landlord issues, or need to relocate for work. But there is one thing that no matter where you are moving or why that you’ll need to do – and that’s pack. Right down to the last teaspoon, you’ll need to box it up, load it up into the removal company van and be on your way. So how can you make packing smoother? And are there any real hacks left?

2 months ahead

Around 8 weeks or so before your move, it’s time to start throwing things away, cleaning, and boxing things you are taking but rarely use. Cleaning the house as you go makes it easier to deal with by the time the big day comes. Now is also a great time to hire a skip; everything that you don’t love, need or use can go in there. 

Since you are starting so early, you can make the most of donating and selling things too. Consider this one of the best ways to reduce the cost of the removal company. The less you have, the smaller the van you can use. 

5 weeks 

A little over a month away means you have no time to waste. Now is the perfect time to relist items, do another run-through of everything you have and make some cash. Some items won’t sell well, and that’s fine – but don’t fall into the trap of putting them in the boot of the car and just driving them around until they make it to the new house. Instead, drop them off asap. 

Old furniture can be one of the trickiest tasks, but many second-hand stores will pick up furniture if it is booked in advance. However, you might also need to cover the cost of petrol or pay a small fee.  Do another round of boxing up; this time, go for books, records, and other items that aren’t often used.  Mark out what the removal company won’t carry in their van. While not all moving companies have rules, many do. Check what they won’t take, and box that up separately. 

2 weeks 

Look out for a set of essential clothing for members of your family, and anything else that can be vacuum-packed away should now be done. The best way to do this is to go room-by-room, so you won’t miss anything. Allow the kids to pack a box that they can take with them and open immediately when they get to the new house.  One of the most important things you can do is to make sure all of your boxes are labeled. This means that when you arrive in the new house, removal staff will know where to put what. Giving you the most productive and seamless moving in. 

Valuables 

Anything that has sentimental value or a high cash value should travel with you in the car or on your lap in the removal van.
