When coding is child’s play with Code A Cake from BT // AD

With parents who are both heavily invested in digital technology, it came as no surprise that Olly, our 7 year old, jumped at the chance to have a go at some coding, thanks to BT. Code A Cake is a new initiative from BT’s Skills for Tomorrow programme which aims to empower 10 million people by giving them the skills they need to flourish in the digital world. Their new Code A Cake initiative is a new online experience designed for children aged 6-11 to understand the art of coding with the medium of baking a cake.

Introducing our children to a digital future with Code A Cake

With the current pandemic, parents like myself are scouring the internet for ideas and activities to keep our children busy. We have found a wealth of resources online and the Code A Cake initiative has been released to encourage children to start a love for learning about the digital world from home. It’s without a doubt that our children will have a digital future ahead of them so there’s no better time to start their learning.

Code A Cake encourages children to programme a robotic arm to help them create their very own digital cake. they will learn the basics of coding including sequencing, variables and looping. As they input instructions, the robotic arm carries out the instructions in real time. Children are encouraged to try out the programming, see their instructions turned into actions and outcomes. Some actions result in the cake not being created whereas other actions create a brilliantly decorated cake. There are different decorating themes to choose from too.

Olly was very keen to have a go. he’s a quick learner, he picked up the skills quickly and with ease. He was confident about following the instructions. he did make a couple of mistakes but easily rectified them to create his very own digital cake. He had great fun and was keen to take the activity further. Therefore, we’re going to make an actual cake using the recipe available to print off at the end of the activity (when we can find eggs in the supermarket!)
