Last week during half-term break, I took the boys to a morning at National Sea Life Birmingham. For the October school holidays, the sea life centre had been turned into the Ascarium (get it?!) There were some spooky Halloween themed activities for little ones to take part in, including a trail to find the missing ingredients of the Sea Witch’s magic potion. This was a great activity for Olly to take part in so we headed inside to seek out the missing ingredients.

Lots of spooky fun with the Ascarium trail
As we head into the Ascarium, Olly was given a trail sheet and he was excited to hunt out the missing ingredients in the tanks and around the Sea Life centre. In our experience, the missing pieces are usually easy to spot and are marked with a big sticker on the side of the tank to show that there is something inside the tank to find.

Don’t forget to meet the Sea Witch
There were 5 missing ingredients to find and you have to explore the whole of the Sea Life centre to complete the trail. At the end of the trail, with 5 ingredients written on the trail sheet, there was the opportunity to meet the Sea Witch and talk to her about the trail. Unfortunately Olly refused to meet her. Perhaps he got a bit spooked out given that it was a Halloween trail. Unfortunately we have no photograph of meeting the Sea Witch where Olly would have exchanged his completed trail sheet for a fantastic reward at the end.

Can you spot all the missing ingredients in the Ascarium?
However, we did enjoy walking around National Sea Life Birmingham and spotting all the missing ingredients. Freddie was happy to see the different shapes swim by in the tanks. He was in awe of the jellyfish as they changed colour and loved watching the Penguins swim about in front of us. Olly’s favourite part of the Sea Life was the 360 degree tunnel where fish, sharks, rays and turtles swim about above, around and underneath you in the tunnel. It’s an incredible space to stand and watch everything swim around you in.

There’s lots going on behind the scenes at Sea Life Birmingham with various projects being built and under wraps for now. We’re looking forward to find out more about those in the next few months.

We’re hoping to go back to Sea Life Birmingham for their Christmas events to meet the main man in the next month or so, can you believe it’s nearly Christmas?
