Review: Hoburne Cotswold for Approved Family Friendly

hoburne cotswold

We recently stayed at Hoburne Cotswold, in picturesque Gloucestershire, as reviewers for the Families Trustmark, Approved Family Friendly. We love the Cotswolds and have been a number of times before, albeit without Little Mr, so we were looking forward to enjoying a weekend away in a family friendly environment.

Our first impressions of the holiday park were good. Hoburne Cotswold family holiday park is set within the beautiful Cotswold Water Park and guests can enjoy the on-site self-catering accommodation; lodges, chalets, and static caravans or bring their own touring caravan or tent. The holiday park was well set out with good signage, clean and free from litter and looked well maintained.

Accommodation

We were allocated a three bedroomed Carolina lodge to sleep in for the weekend with a fully functional kitchen (with dishwasher) dining area, bathroom and en suite shower room. On arrival, we were given a complimentary kitchen pack which included tea and coffee sachets with complimentary dishwasher tablets, cloth, scouring pad and washing up liquid.  The lodge’s living space was clean and comfortable with a TV and DVD player for cosy nights in. In the living room there was an electric fireplace which was used on the evening and helped to warm up the lodge on the wet a Friday evening.

Unfortunately we found the sleeping areas dated and tired looking with a ripped duvet cover and cobwebs in the master bedroom. We were disappointed that there were no plug socket covers in any of the rooms nor did we see a smoke alarm in the lodge.

We could of hired a range of equipment to use throughout our stay such as a high chair, a travel cot and bed guard but we took our own. Prices were reasonable so families could free up a bit of space in their cars by hiring the equipment from Hoburne.

Family friendly facilities

We decided to test out the Hoburne Cotswold facilities on Saturday afternoon with dinner in the holiday park restaurant. We were able to seat Little Mr in a wooden high chair and got a table with ease just before the rush at 5:30pm.

There was plenty of choice on the Children’s menu and Little Mr enjoyed a plate of 2 chicken fillets, potato smiles and peas washed down with a bottle of Fruit Shoot. Again, there was a good selection of food on the menu for adults. Hubby enjoyed a burger and chips whilst I tucked into spinach and ricotta pasta dish. The food was served freshly cooked and we all enjoyed our meal.

hoburne cotswold entertainment

The entertainment started whilst we were eating and the dance floor was full of young children and their parents dancing with the holiday reps and Sammy the Seahorse, the Hoburne mascot. Everyone was enjoying the music and the the entertainment and it was good to see so many families with children getting involved.

We found the toilets and baby changing facilities pleasant and everywhere in the main building clean. There were well maintained notice boards with details of what was on, who’s who and what’s coming up.

Little Mr enjoyed half an hour in the soft play area which was popular with adults who wanted a hot drink in peace and were keen to wear out the kids before bedtime. There is also crazy golf and a large children’s play area outside the main building but we didn’t use them as it was too wet.

The pool

One of the big attractions on site at Hoburne Cotswold is the splash pool and slide. We were keen to take Little Mr in the pool (despite stupidly forgetting our swimwear, thank heavens for the local Tesco supermarket) so enjoyed a good 45 minutes in the pool on Sunday morning. The water was warm, the pool was clean and there was a lifeguard on duty which was reassuring that they had our safety in mind. Hubby enjoyed a ride or two on the slide which was funny to watch.

The swimming pool changing area is unisex with a baby changing cubicle and pull down changing table. There was also a play pen in the changing area for parents to give them a helping hand when getting dressed.

There is also an outdoor pool to use when the weather is warm enough with sun loungers and plenty of patio seating for families to enjoy dining al fresco.

Overall

We had a lovely couple of days at Hoburne Cotswold. I am hugely reassured that they are taking customer feedback and comments onboard and the rejuventation project will make a good difference to the overall feel of the holiday park. We had a comfortable stay in the lodge and can see why parents opt for the Cotswolds as a holiday destination with their families. We would be happy to return in the future and can see why the Hoburne Cotswold is approved as family friendly.

Response from Hoburne Cotswold to this review

Dear Emma,

We were recently forwarded your Approved Family Friendly review for our Hoburne Cotswold site. We’re really glad you enjoyed your time with us but we just wanted to apologise for a few things you encountered during your stay.

Firstly, we apologise for the cleanliness of the lodge you stayed with us in. This isn’t up to our usual Hoburne standards, and we are taking steps to remedy this for the future. We’ve been in contact with the General Manager of the park who would also like to express his apologies for this. With your information, we’ve also replaced the ripped duvet so that other customers won’t have it.

We do have a ‘rejuvenation’ project currently in the planning phase for our lodges to give them a fresh facelift, which should hopefully resolve the ‘dated’ feel of the accommodation.

We’d also like to reassure you that all of our accommodation units are fitted with both smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors for your safety and peace of mind. I asked the Manager personally to locate the smoke detector just to be sure, as it’s a legal requirement that all of our units have them.

In regards to your concern about the lack of plug socket covers, it’s interesting that it has been found that these covers can actually be more dangerous to use than if the socket remains open, mainly by causing electrical fires. UK plug sockets are actually the safest in the world and the covers can prevent some of the built-in safety features of the sockets from working effectively.

Finally, we’d like to say thank you for staying with us and helping us identify areas where we can improve. Your feedback is greatly valued in helping us.
