Inside a capsule wardrobe

If you’re slimming down like me, you’ll understand the importance of having a capsule wardrobe. A small collection of essential pieces to get you through the months where you don’t really want to spend a great deal of money but carry on with life as usual. I hate spending money on clothes knowing that {hopefully} in a couple of months, the said item of clothing will no longer fit me. Therefore the concept of having a capsule wardrobe, filled with a few essentials is all you need to get you through.

What to include in a capsule wardrobe

  • Plain tees – t-shirts can be worn on their own or as part of a layered look. Stick with white, blue and black and you’ll be able to dress them up or down.
  • Shirts – can be worn for smart casual occasions or for in the office when in work
  • Sweatshirts or cardigans – I wouldn’t go mad here but I can usually get away with wearing a cardigan which is a little too big so it doesn’t matter if I lose a lot of weight when wearing these. You can go for the baggy look or size down and wear it unbuttoned to get more use of out it.
  • Jeans – a black pair and a blue pair. Can be worn as part of day to day life or dressed up when off into town for a meal or a dance with friends.
  • Other trousers – leggings, jeggings or tailored trousers. Just one pair of each to get you through.
  • Skirts – not something I would wear a lot of but if you’re a skirt wearer then having a couple staple skirts to dress up with shirts or down with plain tees will work.
  • Coat – a good coat is an essential part of the capsule wardrobe. A good fitting coat will see you through many months and even the cross over of seasons.
  • Footwear – depending on the type of person you are you’ll have a lot of shoes or not enough. I’m usually on the ‘not enough’ spectrum. Your feet can actually shrink when losing weight so it’s important to make sure your feet are comfortable in correctly fitted shoes, boots and pumps.

It’s been said that you only need 37 pieces of clothing and footwear in your wardrobe to create the perfect capsule wardrobe. Looking over the contents of my wardrobe and thinking about the clothes that I actually wear on a regular basis, I tend to agree that 37 is a pretty good indicator.

The wardrobe can be updated over time to suit your new slimmer frame and won’t cost the earth if you replace items of clothing gradually over time rather than all at once.

    Oh gosh, isn’t it funny how your wardrobe changes when you stop going to work? I’ve only got one pair of jeans and a few tops that I wear regularly, I don’t need much anymore.

    I remember when I was slimming down I think I only had 2 pair of trousers and then about 8 tops that was it.
    An interesting thing to try is turn all your hangers around then as you wear things turn them back around after 6 months look at which it’s are still hung the wrong way around and question why that is
