It’s time to get back on board the healthy eating wagon and as I’m taking my bid for good health a little more seriously this year, I thought I should share our weekly meal plans with our Meal Planning Monday post. It’s been a while since I wrote up a meal plan despite doing them every week with the family but with re-joining Slimming World this weekend, I thought I should get into good habits once again and share them here.
Why we meal plan?
There are two very good reasons why we meal plan. The first is because once upon a time, we were awful with meals and every day we would come home from work and decide what we wanted for dinner. Most of the time we didn’t have all the ingredients in for dinner and we would have to go shopping. The second reason is linked to the first. We planned our meals to help save us money. We would be able to come home from work and all the ingredients for the meals we were cooking would be in the fridge and the cupboard and we could cook the meal that evening. No need to go to the supermarket or spend any additional money.
Meal Planning as a family
As a family, it’s really important to meal plan. My children don’t always eat the same foods as we do. Despite being weaned and introduced to flavours, textures and a range of cuisines at an early age, they are fussy. We usually end up cooking two different meals every night as we know they will eat them. It’s not to everyones preference but I’d rather my children eat their food and not waste it.
Also, having to prepare different meals for the whole family can take time. Therefore having a meal plan is a great way of knowing what meal to cook each evening without the hassle of deciding what to have (why does everyone want different food?)
Weekly meal plan
Our meal plans get created each Sunday for the week ahead. As there is limited freezer space to cook masses of food in bulk we have to plan our meals each week. We usually plan around work commitments and any other commitments on the calendar so we know who to cater for on which evening.
As I have now rejoined Slimming World, I’m hoping to lose a fair bit of weight. I have a range of cookbooks and magazines from my years as a member so I’ll be utilising those to come up with a range of meal ideas. My husband really enjoyed a variety of meals in previous years and we still cooked some of these without me being ‘on plan’.
Week One back on the Slimming World plan
This week we have replenished the fridge and have bought a range of key ingredients for our meals. The meals we are having this week are family favourites, they’re easy to cook and will help me get back into the swing of being on plan.
Cottage Pie – using less than 5% fat beef mince
Pizza topped Chicken with Actifry Chips
I’m really looking forward to a week back on plan. I’m looking forward to getting in the kitchen and cooking up some wonderful meals. What are you cooking this week?
