A good mattress is an acquisition for many years, but various spots are often inevitable. Moreover, in most cases, the stain will void the warranty on the exchange of a new mattress. Thus, protect your investment by making mattress cleaning and stain removal a part of your everyday cleaning routine. This is easy to do using simple ingredients that you have no doubt hidden in your cleaning box.
Mattress Cleaning Materials:
- Spray bottle
- Dishwashing liquid
- Hydrogen peroxide (3%)
- Baking soda
- Washing powder
- Soft scrub brush or old toothbrush
- Hand towel and / or sponge
Prepare the mattress for the procedure by removing all bedding and sheets. Clean it thoroughly with a vacuum cleaner using the upholstery nozzle and put on a crevice nozzle and vacuum it where dust and hair collect. They may not be related to the stain you intend to remove, but their removal reduces the number of dust mites, which is especially important for a good night’s sleep if you are allergic.
The way to clean the stains from the mattress depends on the type of stains themselves. Aim at each spot using the appropriate mattress cleaning technique.
How to get rid of stains on a mattress?
- Urine, sweat and vomiting
These body fluids are the most likely culprits of dirt on the mattress. Unfortunately, you cannot wash the mattress as a piece of clothing. Rather, you should use the liquid with the spray bottle sparingly to avoid turning its slowly drying softness into ideal wet conditions for mold and mildew growth. First, gently pat the contaminated area with clean water until it becomes slightly damp. Then mix one cup of 3 percent hydrogen peroxide with three tablespoons of baking soda and a few drops of dishwashing liquid in a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the stain and gently brush it with a soft brush or an old toothbrush until the stain disappears. Finally, rinse the cleaned area with fresh water and pat it with an absorbent towel. Instead of soda, you can use an aspirin tablet or laundry soap.
Using the mattress cleaning procedure described above, remove the blood, making sure that the water and the cleaning solution are cold. Place a solution of baking soda with hydrogen peroxide in the refrigerator for about an hour after stirring to lower the temperature. Most likely, you will need additional cleaning of blood stains, and you may need to repeat the procedure more than once. Remove all excess fluid with a clean towel.
- Food and drink stains: coffee, red wine, etc.
Mix one part of washing powder, one part of vinegar and 10 parts of water in a container. Spray the stain and mix with a soft brush or a toothbrush. Give a solution of 10 to 15 minutes of waiting time. Then blot with a damp towel or sponge to remove stain and cleaning solution. Rinse the towel / sponge and continue to get wet if necessary. Then pat dry with a dry towel to remove excess fluid.
To deodorize the mattress, sprinkle abundantly on the cleaned area with baking soda. This will help to remove unpleasant odors, absorbing the remaining moisture. Allow the mattress to lie down with soda for up to 24 hours, if possible, so that it can fully. Or, if time is of the essence, you can use a fan or hairdryer in a cool installation to speed things up.
Once the mattress is completely dry, clean the baking soda with a vacuum cleaner and make the bed. You will have a good rest, knowing that your mattress is spotless!
