Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, you’ll know that the iconic girl group of the 90’s are back. The Spice Girls have reformed (minus VB) and they’re currently on their Spice World tour around the UK. It’s been a while since I’ve listened to the Spice Girls but with their comeback tour in full flow, it’s reminded me of the days when I was once a really big fan of the band and spent weekends perfecting the dance moves to my favourite songs.
Back in the mid 90’s I was a huge boyband fan. I loved listening to all the popular boy bands of the era including Take That, Backstreet Boys, 911, A1 and Boyzone to name just a few. Take That and the Backstreet Boys were my favourite all time bands and my room was covered in posters from Smash Hits and I was so torn between being Mrs Littrell or Mrs Owen, it was such a hard decision.
There weren’t many girl bands around at the time so listening to boy bands was pretty much what everyone my age (think first / second year at secondary school) did. The Spice Girls burst onto the music scene and immediately, there was one ‘Spice Girl’ that everyone could associate with; Posh Spice, Baby Spice, Scary Spice, Ginger Spice and Sport Spice. For the record, I was a tracksuit ‘wannabe’ with my Kappa Jacket and Adidas Popper Tracksuit bottoms, oh how I wish I had let my Parents keep some photographs of me back in the day!
The Spice Girls took the music industry by storm as there wasn’t anyone like them around. They were fun, cheeky, loud and their music got people dancing and singing. I would perform dance routines with my friends (we all still know the routine to STOP don’t we?) and we’d all take on a character each pretending to be one of the girls. It was great fun and rather hilarious to look back on as we must have looked ridiculous!
I remember recording the Top 40 on a Sunday afternoon and stopping and starting my tape to make sure I had room for the Spice Girls track to come on. Eventually I had all the CD singles (which were quite cheap back in the day) and then for Christmas or my birthday I’d be able to buy the album and get rid of my radio chopped tapes!
Are you a Walkers Spice Girls Best Ever Fan?
As the Spice Girls are back, they’ve teamed up with Walkers to find their ‘Best Ever Fan’. Unfortunately for Dev, he’s not quite the fan he says he was, he’s not a fan of sharing his crisps so will miss out on the big prize.
Spice Girls fans were asked to share a Spice Girls related snapshot from back in the day or create something fun to show their love for the girls. The winner will win a fantastic VIP experience to one of the Spice Girls concerts with an exclusive meet and greet, plus 5* accommodation and travel, the ultimate prize for the best ever fan!
Go check out the entries over on Twitter using the hashtag #BestEverFan as there’s some brilliant videos and ‘Top Fan’ admissions. The winner will be revealed soon and I cannot wait to see who gets to bag the top prize! Would you have shared your favourite crisps with them?
Now admit it, you’re singing your favourite ever Spice Girls track now aren’t you, or is that just me? “Stop right now, thank you very much, I need somebody with the human touch.”
