5 Tricks For Furnishing A New Home On A Budget

*A collaborative post

Moving house is one of the most stressful things that you and your family will ever do. You spend months trying to find the perfect house, dealing with all of the paperwork and then packing up all of your stuff and moving. But unfortunately, the hard work isn’t over just yet. Now you’ve got to furnish the new house and get everything set up, which can get pretty expensive. You might have some furniture from the old place but it might not go well in the new house. There might also be a few things waiting for you but you’ll probably have to bear the cost of a load of new appliances and furniture. After paying the deposit and all of the legal fees, you won’t have a huge amount of money left so you need to find a way to furnish your new house on a budget. Here are some simple ways to do it;

Look For Free Stuff

Believe it or not, some people will give away their own furniture for free. Look on sites like Facebook marketplace or Freecycle.com where people give away old stuff that they don’t need anymore (it’s also a good way for you to clear out old stuff that you don’t need). You’d be surprised how good some of the stuff you can find is. Some of it might need a bit of an overhaul but if you’re willing to put the work in, you can save a lot of money.

Buy Second-Hand

If you can’t find anything for free, you should be able to get some great deals if you buy second hand. Check sites like eBay or Gumtree for some great deals on good quality furniture. You might have to pay quite a bit in delivery fees if you’re unable to pick it up but it’ll still be a lot cheaper than buying brand new stuff. If you want to make even bigger savings, check out charity shops. The British Heart Foundation is one of the best as they have a lot of dedicated furniture shops. All of the stuff is great quality and, even though it’s a little bit worn, it’s all in good condition. If you get wooden furniture, it’s not too difficult to sand it down and repaint it and it’ll be good as new. You can also get some great second-hand mattresses (they’re all cleaned properly before being sold). Mattresses are more expensive than people realize so this is a great saving. Buying second-hand is the best way to get great furniture and save yourself a lot of money.

Unless You’re Buying Appliances

Appliances are the one thing that you shouldn’t get second-hand. Old washing machines and cookers are nowhere near as energy efficient as newer ones. While you might save yourself some money upfront on the cost of the appliances, you’ll end up spending so much more on energy bills over the years. But that doesn’t mean you can’t save money on your appliances though. You can find some great discount codes on sites like NetVoucherCodes.co.uk. If you check regularly and wait until a good deal comes up before you buy, you can make some pretty substantial savings on brand new appliances.

Estate Sales

When people go through a divorce or lose a loved one, they often find themselves having to sell off a lot of their belongings quickly. Often, they’ll have an estate sale where all of their belongings are auctioned off at discount prices. You can get some great deals on good stuff if you go along and there’s a lot to be sold so you could get most of the stuff that you need in one go. Usually, the clearing of a house is handled by a house clearance company who will then sell off all of the stuff afterward. The easiest way to find them is to get in touch with local house clearance companies and ask them about it.

Shop Online

If you are going to buy new furniture and you can’t find any good discount codes for it, you should always try to shop online because it’s usually quite a bit cheaper. The only downside to shopping online is that you don’t get to try the furniture out to see whether it’s comfortable or not. That’s why it’s best to go into a shop and have a look around so you can find the kind of thing that you want and then see if you can get anything similar online for a better price.

Furnishing your home is such a big expense but if you look at these options, you can do it on a budget.
