Family dining at Cookhouse & Pub, Oldbury // Kids eat for £1

Eating out is something we enjoy doing as a family and just last week, we invited my husbands parents to join us for a meal at Cookhouse & Pub in Oldbury, West Midlands. It’s a relatively new pub and restaurant chain (only opening in October last year) so we were looking forward to trying it out and catching up on the news from the family. We also wanted to take advantage of the latest kids eat for £1* offer which is get two courses for £1 with an adult main meal purchased between Monday to Thursday 3:30pm – 5:30pm. Ideal for feeding the troops in the school holidays!

On arrival at the restaurant, we were seated in a large booth at the back of the restaurant. The interiors are colourful and modern giving the restaurant a really relaxed but inviting vibe. We were asked if we wanted drinks and the waiter fetched Freddie a highchair with a tray (thank goodness it wasn’t one of the wooden highchairs that he so often slips in).

The menu at Cookhouse & Pub was varied and seasonal and most importantly something to wet everyones appetite. All freshly prepared dishes include Grills, Burgers, Fish, Classics and Lighter Options too. There’s also a brilliant children’s menu which Olly was pleased with, favourites included Poppin Chicken, Sausage and Mash and Tomato Pasta.

The children’s menu is incorporated in the activity sheet ‘The Cookie Crew Scrapbook’ with puzzles and drawings to do so plenty to keep restless legs and fidgety bottoms occupied.

We decided to order a main course followed by a dessert instead of stuffing our faces to begin with and not having enough room for a sweet treat at the end. We all ordered our favourite meals; mine was the Linguine Carbonara, Shilts ordered the Mixed Grill, my Mother-in-law ordered Grilled Gammon Steak and my Father-in-law ordered the Tender and Lean 8oz Sirloin. Olly opted for a children’s portion of sausage, mashed potato and peas with a jug of gravy.

Our drinks promptly arrived and the conversation was in full swing. Catching up on family news, showing photographs of the boys on the beach from our recent time away and Olly treated us all to some jokes from his new joke book.

Our food arrived and we were all pleased with how it looked, it looked really delicious. Everyone tucked in and I was grateful for the highchair so Freddie could sit and eat his own food whilst the rest of us did. Whilst the food wasn’t the hottest, it was really tasty and we all cleared our plates. Olly enjoyed his sausage and mash with the promise that he could have dessert if he ate at least half of his plate of food. He did!

With clear plates and fully bellies it was time to open the dessert menu. Such a wonderful selection of desserts and of course because it was a treat, we all decided we were having pudding. Olly chose from the children’s menu and had a Funny Face Sundae (ice cream with a wafer cone, sweets and a strawberry lace to decorate) which he thought was a brilliant idea. Other orders from the main menu included the Triple Chocolate Brownie, Indulgent Chocolate Cake and a selection of three mini puds (Lemon Mousse, Mini Mud Pie and Mini Apple Crumble with Custard) for those who can’t decide what to have.

Again, the food was presented well and everyone enjoyed their desserts. Top tip, mini mud pie is very chocolatey so if you’re after a little treat but not too much, the selection of mini puds is a brilliant way to                                                                            indulge. Costa Coffee is served in all Cookhouse and Pub restaurants so you can have a decent cup of coffee after your meal.

We found the service was brilliant, warm and friendly who couldn’t do enough for us. Our waiter Haydn bought over our refillable drinks just as we were finishing the glass so we didn’t need to try and catch his attention. Whenever we review a restaurant, I’m always looking to see how the staff treat other customers. Sometimes, I worry that we’re not getting genuine service when they know we’re there to review but they treated everyone the same from what I could see. Helpful service with a smile. We’ll definitely be back to enjoy more food and take advantage of the deal!

*The kids eat for £1 offer is two courses from the children’s menu available Monday to Thursday between 3:30pm – 5:30pm when an adult purchases a main meal from the main restaurant menu. Additional courses can be added for 75p.

Disclosure: We were invited to sample the menu at Cookhouse and Pub to try out the Kids Eat for £1 offer. We paid for our additional guests to enjoy the food with us.
