As a Mum with a four year old and a newborn baby due at some point in the next six weeks, my thoughts have recently turned to how we’ll handle the early days. It’s been such a long time since we’ve dealt with nappies, feeding and all the joys that those entail that I almost forgot what it was like having a baby that cries. Those cry baby days will soon be upon us and it’s time to remember that each newborn cry tells a different tale.

For new parents, understanding those newborn cries can be a confusing time. A recent survey has found that parents-to-be google “parenting tips” on average of 8,100 hits per month including questions such as “why is my baby crying?” and “why is my baby’s poo green?”[i]. As frustrating as it might be, it’s reassuring to know, you’re not alone.

Why is my baby crying?

Babies cry because it’s their only form of communication at such an early age. It’s a way for babies to call for help when they’re hungry, uncomfortable (and have filled yet another nappy!) or need to relieve tension. It’s estimated that a newborn baby can routinely cry for a total of between 1 to 4 hours a day as part of their adjustment to their new life outside the womb! [ii]

As new parents get to know their newborns, they’ll begin to decipher the distinguishable differences between their cries. Babies have different cries for when they want comfort, want feeding or need attention. Typical cries can be described as;

Whilst there can often be a solution to help a crying baby, one of the most distressing cries for a parent can be when a baby suffers from colic. Colic is a medical term for excessive and frequent crying* in a baby who appears to be otherwise healthy and well fed. Olly suffered with colic when he was a newborn and it really threw us as we didn’t really know what was wrong with him and why he was so upset. As soon as we realised it was colic and we were able to help him, we were all much happier.
