Walking hand in hand

hand in hand

We walk hand in hand around the corner to your school. You’re in Reception now and get to stay in school all day until 3:30pm when the home time bell goes. It’s a long day for you but I know you’re ready for routine and structure again. You love to learn and have such an inquisitive mind, always asking questions and wanting to know why things work and have a purpose. I have to remind myself that you’re only four years old with such an old head on young shoulders.

We walk hand in hand into the playground and your usual beaming smile disappears. You hide behind my leg and don’t want to face any of your friends. But it’s okay to be nervous and it’s okay to be anxious. Although it’s all so familiar, it’s a year full of change. Last years morning and afternoon pre-school and classes have been merged, there’s more children in your class and you don’t yet know them all. But you soon will. You’re a friendly, quiet little boy who is thoughtful and is always thinking ahead. You have such a caring nature and you have made some wonderful friends. You’ve made those friends without us Olly, you did that and we’re so proud of you.

hand in hand

We walk hand in hand to the back of the line where your class are lining up. You look at me with tears in your eyes and my heart breaks a little. I wipe your tears away and remind you that you can do this. You’re going to have a good day, full of fun with your friends. But in that moment, you forget that you enjoyed your day at school yesterday. You told me so on the way home. We are so proud of you Olly, you always try your best and that is always good enough for us.

We walk hand in hand on the way home. You’ve had a good day and to our complete surprise, you even tried some carrots at lunchtime. You’ve got a shiny sticker to show us, wearing it proudly on your chest and you can’t wait to show your Daddy. You did something you told us you wouldn’t and you’ve even surprised yourself. You can do it Olly, you really can.

We will always be there to hold your hand and show you the way. Your pre-school days are over, it’s time for Reception and to start your school days adventure. We’re with you every step of the way, encouraging you to try your best, supporting you with your reading, practicing your writing and to remind you to smile and embrace the changes you’re facing. Hold your head up high son, it’s a brand new adventure and one you’re really going to enjoy. We promise!

Aww bless him, I’m sorry he got upset in the morning but how brilliant that he is having such good days at school. I hope his love of school continues to grow and he finds it easier as he gets used to it.

Aww! This made me emotional. It is so hard when little one’s get upset going in to school. I am sure it won’t last long though. It sounds like he’s having a great time at school. x
