Zap Zap Math App for 4-6 year olds // review

*A collaborative review

It may well be the summer holidays but that doesn’t mean the learning has to stop. I’m a big believer in continuing routine over the Summer with reading books with Olly before bedtime and encouraging him to write and draw in the afternoon. We were recently introduced to Zap Zap Math and it’s a great app to keep children interested in Maths in a fun way during the school holidays.

Zap Zap Math is an app based learning environment for primary school aged children, more specifically between 4 – 6 years old. Available from the App Store and Google Play, the app is just currently priced at £2.99 to download and is a great resource for children to test and develop their math skills.

The app is quick and easy to download and once installed, it’s easy to set up. Parents will need to set up the programme for their child with an email address and then personalise the programme with their child’s name.

The app is really easy to use and Olly has been getting on with it really well. At first there’s a short story to watch to introduce the space themed play. Olly has needed a little bit of help reading the prompts but that’s absolutely fine as I would usually supervise him when he’s on his tablet anyway. He’s been able to navigate around the programme, flying through the levels once getting used to the visual questions and finding out what he needs to do. There’s a voice prompt too if needed.

I really like the design of the app. It’s engaging and colourful and Olly has loved the rockets, the aliens and all the out of this world space graphics. I love how this app is subtly encouraging Olly to remember what he’s learned already in pre-school with easy addition and subtraction questions through play. He’s loved playing the app and asked for extra time on his tablet to complete more levels.

Zap Zap Math

Although the app has an American feel to it with it’s use of Kindergarten terminology, it doesn’t detract from the learning environment or how Olly’s been able to use it. Perhaps in the future, a version for UK school systems could be introduced and the word Kindergarten could be replaced with Primary.

Overall, the Zap Zap Math app has been a fun one for Olly to play on and he’ll no doubt be using it throughout the Summer to continue learning his Maths.

Disclosure: We are working with Zap Zap Math this Summer but all words and opinions are our own.

This sounds brilliant Emma, definitely the sort of thing that I’d like Libby to use over the summer. It is a real worry that her learning will go backwards during such a long break.

This app sounds so good! Troy is just about to start school and this would be great for him – and Athena too actually! x

    Hi Emma,

Excellent review! It was very descriptive and thorough. As a result, I will tell my nephew about this app for him to improve his math skills.

I recently developed a mobile word app, and I was wondering if you can take a look? Some of the key points are:
    • Contains facts about space constellation objects
    • Improves spelling and vocabulary
    • Requires more thinking and less guessing than most other word games out there

If you are interested, you can find the download link on my website:

    Thanks!
