New Year’s resolutions: sorting your home in 2017

*Post in collaboration with Jessica Foreman

The arrival of a new year always gives us a great excuse to make some changes. If you’re looking to sell your home in 2017, or simply want to be more organised, it might be the perfect time to rearrange the furniture and have a clear out.

Here are some top tips for sorting your home, and how you might even be able to make a little profit on the side.

Turn clutter into cash

After the indulgent Christmas period, it’s time to get rid of many things you no longer need and make room for your new gadgets and gismos. There are plenty of ways to use a post-Christmas clear out to make a bit of spare cash. As well as online sales platforms like eBay and Gumtree, sites like Music Magpie, Zapper and Ziffit all have handy smartphone scanners so you can see how much they’ll give you for items like books, CDs and DVDs. Don’t forget to digitise any music or movies first to avoid seller’s remorse.

Revisit repairs

Grab a can of WD40 and sort those squeaky doors. Then move onto those dripping taps, the gutters that need clearing of autumn leaves, and all those other tasks you’ve been putting off in the run up to the festive season. If any of these jobs involve tampering with electricity or gas, make sure you hire a qualified tradesman for your own safety.

Get creative

Now that the Christmas decs are packed away, the new year is a great time to get inspired by the 2017 interior design trends on the horizon. Embrace your creative side and add a lick of paint to a room or two in deep, earthy greens. Or introduce some natural materials into your home with wood furnishings, or ceramic and terracotta details like tiles or plant pots.

Redefine your space

Could you improve your property’s profitability by renting out a room? Or perhaps you could convert your dining room into a home office, making it both a productive and potentially tax-deductible.

Try out new tech

An evolving home isn’t all about cleanups and repairs, it’s also about using the latest tech to make your home smarter. Try out new ideas, like the smart heating system Hive, or ambient light and audio innovations like Sonos or Philips Hue, to take control of the atmosphere in your home. You’d be surprised what a difference it could make.
