It was rather alarming to hear recently that office workers who sit for at least eight hours a day have an increased risk of premature death. According to the research, office workers need to exercise for an hour a day to counteract the detrimental effect that our modern day sedentary lifestyles have on our bodies. As a office worker myself for four days per week, I can see how the research stacks up as it’s not always possible to get a break every hour as well as exercising at lunchtimes or evenings. With family life as busy as ever, when it comes to exercising it’s often the last thing on my mind after a busy day.
When I’m at work during the week, I try to keep as active as possible. My job involves working on a computer for at least seven hours a day so I’ve become accustom to getting off my bottom more during the working day where possible. I drink a lot of water throughout the day which results in frequent toilet trips. Luckily our toilets are on the floor below and so I regularly climb the stairs during the day. Our colour printer is also downstairs so when printing to that I try and collect my printing as often as possible to get some steps in.
Furniture at work know the struggles office workers have with getting exercise during the working day and are encouraging office workers to try out Office Yoga which can be completed at your desk throughout the day.
There’s some brilliant moves here that you can try at your desk during your break to get your joints, muscles and limbs moving. I’m definitely going to be giving a couple of the moves a go this week to help reduce stiffness and back pain from sitting still for too long. I’m also very conscious of the lack of exercise I’m getting and bid to improve this too!
