Going behind the scenes at Sea Life Birmingham

Behind the scenes Tour SeaLife Birmingham

Earlier this year, we were delighted to have been chosen at Family Ambassadors for Sea Life Centre in Birmingham. It’s one of the best attractions for families in Birmingham City Centre and is continually improving with new displays and features that the whole family can enjoy. We were recently invited to the Sea Life Centre to visit the new Behind the Scenes tour which has recently opened.

I was really looking forward to going behind the scenes as over the years, I have spent many an hour looking at all the exotic fish, the starfish and the rays that it was fantastic to be able to ask all those questions and find out just what they feed the fish in the centre and how they look after them on a daily basis.

We met our tour guide at our allocated time at the door at the back of the Rays pool. We went inside to a laboratory with lots to see around the room. To our surprise, we were the only ones on our tour so we had a personal guide around the lab and was able to ask lots of questions.

One of the first things we were shown was the food. With the variety of fish to feed in the Sea Life centre, we were introduced to the large variety of food that is made up and handled in the lab. There was so much to see. Olly was able to have a good look and a good smell of the food (yuk!) and he was fascinated.

We were then shown a table full of interesting things and I won’t go into too much detail to ruin the surprise if you’re going but Olly got to stroke some shark skin and see it up close in the magnifying glass which was really interesting to see.

We also got to find out about the breeding programmes that the Sea Life are actively involved in and Olly was introduced to the puffer fish, the sharks and a very smiley looking ray.

The behind the scenes tour at the Sea Life is fascinating. There’s so much more to the Sea Life Centre than just what you see on show as you walk around. There’s feeding schedules to stick to, vital cleaning systems on the go and all the daily care to make sure the fish are all kept alive and swimming. It’s really worth the ticket price to find out more about what goes on behind the scenes.
