The first week back at work after the Christmas holidays is always hard work; the early mornings, back to the grind, the daily routine, it’s all too much after a lazy couple of weeks. Luckily for us, Toby Carvery invited me and the family to our local restaurant to take the night off cooking and enjoy a meal without worrying about the washing up!
Our local Toby Carvery, Walsall Broadway
Toby Carvery Walsall Broadway is our go-to-place for carveries. We’re familiar with the restaurant but haven’t visited in a while so it was nice to visit after a busy day at work and enjoy dinner with the family. We invited my in-laws who had been looking after Olly all day so it was nice to treat them to a meal and enjoy a drink or two.
The menu at Toby Carvery is as you would expect at a carvery. There’s a four roast selection of meats including gammon, turkey, beef and pork with lots of seasonal vegetables that are not only steamed but roasted too. No carvery meal would be complete without roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings and sage and onion stuffing. The carvery is priced at £6.29 which is great value when you can add as much vegetables onto your plate as you can manage. My hubby and Father-in-law opted to upgrade their main meals and for an extra £1.50 and they enjoyed extra meat, a second Yorkshire pudding and two chipolata sausages.
Child friendly options
Olly is a really good eater when it comes to meat and vegetables. He loves gammon and turkey so we knew he would happily eat those. We ordered Olly his own plate of food as he has quite an appetite of an evening after a busy day at his Grandparents and I’m glad we did. He enjoyed his favourite vegetables of carrots and peas smothered in gravy. He was a happy boy! The children’s carvery is priced at £4.59 and is great value for hungry toddlers like Olly.
Slimming World friendly
As I’m following the Slimming World plan, I wanted to stay on track as much as possible so opted for gammon and turkey with as much free and speedy vegetables as I could manage; braised cabbage, peas, carrots, sprouts and cauliflower. I know sometimes carvery vegetables can be cooked in butter but it would have only been a couple of syns at most for the amount I had. I didn’t have any roast potatoes but did have a tablespoon of mashed potato and some stuffing. I don’t really like gravy on my dinner so had my dinner dry but it was delicious and hit the spot.
If you don’t fancy a carvery, there are other alternatives to enjoy on the menu including vegetarian and vegan dishes.
Once we had enjoyed our main courses, the rest of the family ordered a pudding whilst I filled up on a refillable Diet Pepsi.
My Mother-in-law enjoyed a yummy Treacle Sponge with hot custard, Olly enjoyed a children’s portion of vanilla ice-cream with chocolate sauce and a flake, and my hubby and Father-in-law had the Chocolate Brownie ice-cream sensation which they both struggled to finish!
Our waitress was very happy to help us throughout our meal, asking us if we needed anything and was really accommodating. Both my Mother-in-law and I really enjoyed our night off courtesy of Toby Carvery and it was nice to spend a couple of hours as a family enjoying a meal together after a manic day.
