Review: Family friendly dining with Harvester

Harvester Solihull

After a busy week at work, both hubby and I were both rather relieved to have been invited to Harvester restaurant in Solihull for our dinner on Friday evening. I don’t think either us had the energy to cook a family meal so it was nice to head over to the restaurant to peruse the new menu and sample some of the new dishes.

The Harvester restaurant in Shirley, Solihull is one that we have been to previously as we have family who live locally. We haven’t been since it had it’s latest makeover so it was nice to enjoy a few hours in the relaxed family friendly atmosphere and make the most of not having to wash up!

After a warm welcome by the staff we were given our menus and spent the next fifteen minutes trying to decide what food to try out. The new menu has a wide variety of delicious sounding dishes to choose from with the new tapas-style starters catching my eye immediately; grilled chorizo with padron peppers and halloumi skewers with grilled watermelon all took my fancy.

Hubby chose to devour the ultimate nachos for one with pulled pork for his starter and we were both suitably impressed when our dishes came out just a few minutes after we had picked a bowl full of salad from the salad bar.

I love that the salad bar is unlimited at Harvester. I didn’t intend to have a meal on plan at the restaurant as I believe in everything in moderation but I love that you can just help yourself to whatever salad you fancy and there’s now pickled onions, gherkins and pickled cabbage in the salad bar which I’ve not seen before.

Olly chose a sausage filled yorkshire pudding with mashed potato and garden peas which is pretty much his favourite ever meal. He loved it. The yorkshire pudding was crispy and the sausages were apparently “delicious!” Olly’s main meal came out with our starters which was great as he didn’t have to wait to eat his meal and he could tuck in straight away whilst we enjoyed our starters which were for the record, very tasty and we could have happily ordered them again!

I love how grown up Olly’s meal looked. It didn’t look like a children’s meal which made him feel like a big boy and definitely influenced his behaviour as he sat nicely at the table enjoying his food.

For our main course, Hubby ordered the mixed grill and I couldn’t decide what I wanted so I opted for the ‘I want it all’ option which had a mix of gammon, rotisserie chicken, chicken thigh skewers, chorizo sausage and ribs. My eyes were definitely bigger than my belly as when the plate of food came I was in shock at how big it was. It was huge! I’m not a fan of chicken thighs so didn’t eat those or the ribs as they weren’t too my taste but I enjoyed the chicken, chorizo and gammon which were all cooked to perfection and went really well with the sweet potato fries.

Hubby loves a good mixed grill and his meal didn’t disappoint. The steak was cooked just how he liked it and Olly loved helping his Daddy sample the chips!

We couldn’t leave without sampling the dessert menu and we all had ice cream. Olly chose the DIY Sundae which comes with plain ice cream and mini bowls full of delicious treats to sprinkle on top as desired. It was a hit!

The prices at Harvester are all very reasonable and the customer service at the Solihull restaurant was friendly and welcoming with Yousef, our waiter being attentive and engaging with Olly. We had a really lovely evening at the restaurant and would definitely go back to sample the rest of the menu with the family in the new year.

Thanks to Harvester for inviting us to the restaurant. We were given a voucher towards the cost of the meal but all words and images are my own.

That is one impressive dessert being devoured there! I’ve never eaten at a Harvester I don’t think. Looks good though! Maybe I should try one out at some point. #triedandtested

Great write up. I’m hungry reading your post! I LOVE the salad bowls at Harvester – especially as you can go to help yourself as soon as you get there which is fabulous if you are with hungry toddlers! I was also really impressed with how they did in the recent Soil Association awards.
We have 2 nearby – I think another visit is overdue!
