Review: Steak and Milkshakes at Beefeater, York

When we go away for the weekend we always try to fit in a meal at a local restaurant and we were delighted when Beefeater invited us to review their latest Garden menu at one of their restaurants in York.

We had hoped to sit outside the restaurant in the garden to enjoy the sunshine but as it was a really beautiful day, the garden was full of folk enjoying a pint or two and there were no tables with parasols left. Therefore, we happily sat down inside, which was quiet for our sitting at 5:15pm in a cool shaded area of the restaurant.

Little Mr was delighted to see the children’s menu featuring the Mr Men and Little Miss characters so enjoyed browsing the menu and picking out what he wanted for his dinner.

Little Mr enjoyed colouring in the activity pack that the staff had kindly given him. He loved looking at the characters and enjoying the story. Activity booklets are a great way to keep little fingers occupied whilst they wait and I think the use of well known characters is a great way of keeping little ones interested.

The children’s menu has a range of children’s favourites and you can pick a meal deal with as much or as little courses as your little one can manage. Little Mr opted for a main course of ‘Create Your Own Pizza’ which he had with bacon and sweetcorn and a couple of side dishes of peas and a slice of garlic bread.

It took us a while to decide what food we wanted as the menu looked fantastic. We always enjoy coming to Beefeater as both hubby and I love steak but it’s good to know the menu has expanded and the chain have recently added four new mouth-watering burgers to their menu, including the mega ‘Double Bacon & Cheese Steak Burger‘, which is a must for any meat lover, incorporating a 1/4lb steak burger with streaky bacon and Monterey Jack cheese, yum!

We asked for Little Mr’s meal to arrive with our starter and as we were both hungry, hubby and I shared the Spicy Loaded Nachos which were enormous.

The Nachos were really tasty with a great mix of corn tortilla chips, melted cheese, fire roasted green chilli salsa, tomato salsa, red and spring onions, sour cream and chives. Hubby dipped his nachos into the gooey cheese sauce but I’m not a huge fan so didn’t try it out but hubby loved it. We didn’t finish the meal as it was too big and we were conscious about fitting in our mains.

For our main course, I ordered a medium to well done steak salad with no dressing. I loved how tender the steak was and it was really delicious. My hubby ordered the 10oz Rib-Eye steak which came with a grilled tomato, a flat mushroom, a bowl of triple cooked chips and a side salad. The chips are now unlimited so even the hungriest of diners can ask for another bowl full although hubby only managed a handful of chips. Hubby really enjoyed his meal and said the steak was cooked just how he liked it.

Unfortunately, hubby’s meal had to be replaced before he could tuck in as an insect was found crawling on the plate but the staff swiftly apologised and replaced the meal within 7 minutes which pleased hubby.

Little Mr did really well with his meal and ate just over half of it. Apologies to the staff cleaning up after us as there were peas everywhere! The manager came over to apologise about hubby’s meal and asked Little Mr if he wanted dessert. He beamed “yes please” and picked out the Mini Chocolate Challenge to try. Once his dessert arrived, his little eyes lit up and he was in his element making a mess with the warm chocolate brownie pieces, the marshmallows, ice cream and chocolate dipping sauce.

The dessert menu was given to us and I decided to ‘treat’ myself with a slice of Caramel Apple Betty served with ice cream whilst hubby opted for his all time favourite, Warm Chocolate Brownie with pouring cream.  The desserts were really nice and just the right size to finish off a delicious meal.

I was also interested to see that Beefeater have started to sell milkshakes and as Little Mr had refused his morning milk, we chose a vanilla milkshake to try out between us. It was thick and creamy but lacked the wow factor if I’m honest. The limited edition Strawberry and Clotted Cream milkshake sounds ideal for Wimbledon week!

The service we received at the Beefeater Millfield Rawcliffe restaurant was great. Helpful, friendly staff who couldn’t do any more for us. They replaced my diet pepsi when Little Mr decided to dunk his mayonnaise covered chip into it and replaced hubby’s meal without a quibble. We weren’t kept waiting unnecessarily and all our food was hot and cooked to our preference.

Our meal for a childrens main and dessert, sharing starter, two mains and two desserts including unlimited soft drinks came to just under £60. We thought that the price of our food justified the quality (and quantity) of the meals we enjoyed and we would happily return to Beefeater to enjoy the rest of the menu.

Families may be interested to know that kids eat free every Saturday between 12pm and 5pm, terms and conditions apply.

Disclaimer: We were given a voucher towards the cost of our meal but all photographs and words are my own and this forms an honest and reliable review.
