I love this time of year. We’re well into Autumn with golden shades of leaves laying on the path, the alarm goes off in the dark and the heater gets a blast in the car on the way to work. Before we know it, it’ll be Winter and the mornings before work will be spent wrapping up warm to brave the elements outside and scraping the ice off the car windscreen. One of the things I love to do before winter really sets in is find a new coat. A new coat sets me up for the Winter, it’s like a coat of armour against the chills.
I love looking at new styles, new retailers and then deciding on how and when I would wear them. Ideally, I need a couple of coats. I need a new coat that is going to look smart enough for work (1), withstand being outside in the rain on a cold winters day when the fire alarm in one of my schools has gone off mid-meeting (true story!) and I must be able to drive in it. I need a new coat that looks stylish and smart on a day out, not too dressy so I can still walk to the park without looking out of place and one that will look lovely with my new boots.
This year I’m loving a variety of styles; all of which have their own merits. I love long coats that cover my bottom half. There is nothing worse than a cold bottom and when you have one of ample size like myself, it’s best to keep it covered. I also really like coats with hoods (2). I like to be cosy and there’s always a coat with a faux fur hood in my wishlist. I love the duffle coats that are out this season, simple to fasten and can be done up in the cold with my gloves on. I’m all for easy living in the cold!
I also love coats that give a nod to military fashion (3). The stand up collar frames the face and the button shoulder tabs are stylish detailing. Military coats look smart but shouldn’t be kept for Sunday best. I’d be teaming it with a pair of indigo jeans, a crisp white shirt and chelsea boots. I’m really looking forward to Winter, are you?
