Parent Essentials – Braun ThermoScan 5 // Review

mrsshilts review

Just before Christmas we were lucky enough to have been sent the Braun ThermoScan 5 ear thermometer to review. A thermometer is one of the most important pieces of essential kit I personally think any parent needs for their little ones as babies and small children’s temperatures can change in an instant.

Braun ThermoScan 5 ear thermometer

The Braun ThermoScan 5 is a clever bit of kit with its patented ExacTemp pre-warmed tip. The ear thermometer can be used to accurately measure your little one’s body temperature. According to the detailed packaging, ‘the thermometer measures the infrared heat generated inside the ear as the eardrum shares the same blood supply with the temperature control centre in the brain’. Therefore allows for a more accurate temperature reading than any other part of the body. This is thoroughly reassuring for a first time parent like me with very limited knowledge about baby and childhood illnesses. We had previously used a forehead thermometer but Little Mr would never keep still long enough for an accurate reading. This thermometer is quick and simple to use and makes the task of getting a baby’s temperature an easier one.

Included in with the Braun ThermoScan 5 is a protective case with lens filter storage and 21 lens filters which are disposable and help maintain the thermometers accuracy and promotes good ear hygiene.

The ear thermometer is very easy to use. Once a fresh filter has been placed over the tip, gently insert the probe into the ear canal. The ThermoScan 5 is very clever and will let you know if you have placed the thermometer in the right place through the sound of a long beep at the end of the temperature reading and a temperature reading on the digital display. If the thermometer was position incorrectly for the reading it will show an error message on the digital display.

There’s a useful memory feature on the thermometer so you can rely on the thermometer to record the last temperature that was taken. The model I was sent records up to 8 temperatures which is great for forgetful and tired memories like mine.

We were able to use the Braun ThermoScan 5 over the Christmas period when Little Mr was poorly. Luckily he didn’t have a temperature and the thermometer constantly reassured me that he wasn’t running a fever. I checked his temperature routinely over the five days he was poorly and I’m pleased that the readings didn’t indicate anything serious which put my mind at rest.

The Braun ThermoScan 5 is priced at £32.49 (price checked at Boots online on 13.01.2014) and I would definitely recommend the thermometer as an essential piece of kit that any parent needs.
