Keep your chatting children safe online

Once your children reach a certain stage, they are likely going to want to access the internet.  This is happening from a very young age as most schools are now introducing computing and IT as soon as a child is able to control a mouse.  So if you don’t already have a computer at home, you may be looking at getting one.  This is just a drop in the ocean, as once you have access to the web, you then have to start thinking about what your kiddies, tweens or teens will be doing online.

This is where planning and forethought is a great help.  If you are not sure where to start, there is help available from other sources, other than just asking your friends and colleagues what their children get up to online.

Take a look at the Speakrandom app, it’s a platform where you can connect with others in a safe and friendly environment. Once you get yourself onto the World Wide Web, check out the websites that give child-friendly advice for surfing the net. quib.ly provides chat room safety tips for parents and is a great portal and virtual resource that will make you feel that you are not alone. Once registered you will find yourself in the company of lots of other parents also looking for help and advice with regard to their children and technology. The site is not only extremely easy to use, but you will find topics sorted into groups as well as being able to select your child’s age range and research topics most appropriate to them.

Here you can look at some of the questions being posed by other parents, as well as answers to these queries that have been given by other members and the Quib.ly panel of experts.  If you are totally new to the internet, take your time, browse the site and just get used to it.  When it comes to providing chat room safety tips for parents and their charges, you will find the site a great help.  If you cannot find the information that you are looking for in the drop down boxes, simple type the words ‘chat room’ into the search box at the top of the page.  It will then bring up a whole host of questions and answers relating to your chosen subject.

A lot of the information and advice is based upon good old common sense, but if you do start to feel out of your depth, don’t panic.  You will find sensible suggestions such as telling your children to only chat online to people that they already know i.e. friends and school pals.  Also never to give out personal information and to be very careful about the sort of photos they may post. Even their Avatar should be checked out.  The essential thing that you will glean from all of this information is that you should encourage your children to keep you in the loop.  Ensure that they feel relaxed and able to talk to you about anything that may bother them when they are online. Adopt an open-door policy with your children and you will not go far wrong.
