First Birthday gift ideas – Little Mr’s birthday presents

first birthday gift ideas

Little Mr turned one a few weeks back and after a busy few weekends we’ve finally got round to seeing all the wonderful presents he was gifted to on his birthday. He was a very lucky boy and received a lot of lovely presents from our friends and family.

Choosing gifts for little one’s first birthdays are always tricky. I often wonder if I should get a practical present or a fun one, some clothes or just a gift card for the parents to spend on their little ones at their leisure. Luckily for Little Mr, he had a varied selection of gifts including gift vouchers, money, toys, books and clothes.

Here’s a closer look at some first birthday gift ideas taken from Little Mr’s first birthday haul.

Mega Bloks First Builders Castle
This is the first set of Mega Bloks that Little Mr has ever played with and the Castle with it’s own King and Dragon is very cute. Mega Bloks are a great choice for little ones to play with as they encourage hand to eye co-ordination and encourage them to learn how to stack the bloks to build their own castle. Mega Bloks are sold in sets and they all co-ordinate with each other so you can build up as much of the collection as you like and let their imaginations run wild.

Lego Duplo Number Train
There’s a big love of Lego Duplo* in our family. My Sister and I had a huge amount of Duplo at our parents house and when my nephew was first born, my Mom got the duplo down from the loft and it’s become a firm favourite with my nephew. Of course, now Little Mr loves playing with it too so his Grandparents bought him this Lego Duplo number train to have fun with.

VTech Toot Toot Drivers Garage
Little Mr received some VTech Toot Toot Drivers* collection for Christmas from his Grandparents and he has loved it so much that they bought him more of the collection for his first birthday. The Toot Toot cars make lots of fun noises and they’re great for playing with the interactive features of the garage. A real winner to keep little hands occupied for ten minutes.

Roald Dahl’s The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me
I’m a firm believer that children should learn to love books from a young age and Little Mr is no exception. We’ve been reading to him since he was in my tummy so I love that our friends and family have bought him books for his first birthday. I’ve read quite a lot of the Roald Dahl* collection but believe it or not, I’ve not read this book so I’m looking forward to reading it with Little Mr.

Whizzy Wheels: London Bus illustrated by Marion Billett
Little Mr’s uncles live in the big smoke and as soon as they saw this fun Whizzy Wheels* board book beautifully illustrated by Marion Billett they snapped it up to show Little Mr where they live. All the popular London landmarks are included on the London bus journey with it’s four moving wheels, it’s a fun and informative book.

Sweatshirts from Next
As Little Mr continues to grow at an alarming rate, we decided to buy him some gorgeous jumpers from Next for his birthday. In sizes 12-18 months the jumpers are a still a little too big for him but I’m sure he’s going to grow into them just fine. I love the print of the ochre headphones sweater and the appliqued funky monkey sweater is just adorable. We’re big fans of clothes from Next as they always wash well and have (so far, touch wood) resisted all of Little Mr’s dinner stains.

That’s just a selection of the wonderful gifts LIttle Mr received but they have all been wonderful and Little Mr has enjoyed playing with them so far. They’re not too expensive and are likely to last a good couple of years, if not more.

We love duplo here, and it last years- my ten year old still incorporates his into his building now!

Some lovely ideas here. That first birthday is such a special one but babies are too young to know what’s going on so you never really know what to buy. I can’t even remember what we got for my two…some rocker toy I think, but I love the idea of the Roald Dahl books – something they can grow into and love forever. :)

Thanks Donna, you’re right. He didn’t really have a clue and wasn’t all that interested in opening the pressies but he loves playing with them x

  4. Michelle says

Some lovely toys there – I remember buying my son a set of Tweenies dolls for his 1st birthday, I don’t think they’re even on the telly any more!

  5. Mummy of Two says

First birthday presents can be tricky can’t they! I have found it difficult to find things for my daughter as she is a second child and has had a lot of toys handed down. We bought the Duplo letters train for her at Christmas and it is great.

The twins got the duplo train for Christmas! They love it! They’re also loving mega blocks at the moment, the castle looks fab :-) x #blogclub

Baby is one in a month and I haven’t bought a single present yet! yikes! Great choices x

We didn’t buy much for him to be honest, he got a lot for Christmas so we only bought him a few things (Jumpers and the Mega Bloks) Enjoy shopping for her birthday and it’s normal to get emotional ;)

  12. Terry says

Thanks for all the great First Birthday gift ideas. I have a granddaughter truning 1 in May, so I am really looking for ideas.

  13. Jenni says

I really love the books you chose, I am always terrified of being gifted lots of plastic for my sons birthday so we had a book themed party for his 1st birthday where we asked everyone to give him a copy of their favourite childhood book. Having said that, he would have loved that garage, he plays with it all the time at one of local play groups.

  14. Rachel @ activities4kidz says

Harrison had toot toot garage for his first birthday. Its been great but gets unbelievably irritating! Alex had a mega bloks table for his first but as yet (now 16months!) Neither him or Harrison have really shown interest in it. Love the jumpers! X

  15. VaiChin @Rambling Through Parenthood says

These are really great gifts. Building blocks and books are always great as presents.

  16. Stephs Two Girls says

Great ideas. It’s funny how quickly you forget what are relevant presents to buy for the younger ages, so you should keep a list!

Sebby turns one in June and I have no idea what to get him. I have a house full of toys as he has older brothers and sisters plus I am a childminder. I am sure we will find something though

  20. Shell Louise says

I totally agree about the books. I’ve read to all of mine from birth and they always get books for birthday and Christmas from us and friends and family :)

  21. Kizzy says

Some great First Birthday present ideas there. Mine always loved books and noisy toys at that age.

  22. Donna says
