Merry Christmas

It’s Christmas Eve which means only one thing in the Shilts household and that’s family. We’ll be spending the next 4 days back to back with family, new and old, close and extended. And I can’t wait.

So, here’s wishing you a very Merry Christmas, I hope you all have a wonderful time, drink far too much booze, eat one to many naughty goodies and get a few sackfuls of gorgeous pressies too..

Snowed in..

How chuffed am I that it’s the Christmas holidays? I am really lucky to have been able to book off the Christmas holidays from work and I have 15 long days off work. Next day at work is in 2011, woohoo!

The snow fell right on cue early Saturday morning as hubby and his Dad went into Birmingham City Centre for their annual Christmas shopping trip. The snow carried on through the day quite heavily and by about 3pm there was about 10cm on the ground. It looked so pretty outside. Mikey loved it and spent a good five minutes burying his head in the snow and resurfacing with what looked like a snow beard!

Sunday morning we had planned to visit some friends to deliver Christmas pressies so we attempted to dig my car out and was amazed to see how much snow had actually fallen.

We managed to get the snow and ice off the car and read the in-car temperature gauge at minus 6c. The roads however were lethal, frozen slush and snow is not pleasant to drive on. Luckily the M6 was gritted to perfection and we managed to get to our destination in one piece. My advice, if you don’t have to go out, stay in the warm!

We planned our big Christmas food shop for today so we got up early and made our way to the supermarket. Hubby was a bit worried we would be fighting people off for a trolley as in recent years but no, it was dead and we were able to get 2 big trollies to fill with yummy christmas goodies. This year it’s our turn to host the annual family get together. My Moms side of the family always get together on the day after Boxing Day to meet up and swap pressies so we have prepared for it this year and have food and booze galore in preparation. If we get snowed in, we’ll be sozzled!

Take care in the snow and ice this week

Doggy on ice…

We’ve had a fair bit of snow here in the Midlands recently and I’m sure I’m not alone in saying that some dogs absolutely love it. Mikey, our five year old Westie does. This is him in the snow that fell late on Friday night (3rd December); he wouldn’t come back into the house as he was enjoying chasing the snowflakes falling too much.

As much as we both love the snow unfortunately it does bring with it hazardous conditions for both of us. This time last year we had some really cold weather and the garden was all icy and frosty and as usual Mikey had wanted to go out into the garden to investigate. A few minutes later, I heard a yelp and saw Mikey hopping back into the kitchen with blood pouring from his paw. He’s slipped on the ice and caught his claw in one of the slabs and it had ripped it off. Poor little dog was in agony. To cut a long story short he went straight to the Vets, had to be bandaged up until he could be operated on the next day. Thank goodness for pet insurance, that’s all I can say! (Tesco Pet Insurance is worth every penny, paying a small amount each month is so worthwhile, you won’t even notice it! Much better than a nasty Vets bill just before Christmas!)

Take care of your pets this winter and make sure they’re covered, just in case!

Spreading the Christmas cheer…

A few months back I posted a comment on Rosie’s blog.  She had been sent a brand spanking new HD TV from a very generous benefactor.. well never expecting anything back, as you do, I left a comment on how lovely that was and thought that was that. Imagine my surprise when I get an email from Appliances Online saying that they had read my comment and wanted to send me some Christmas chocolate. Of course, I was cheeky and asked for a new washing machine but not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, a girl never turns down chocolate does she? So of course, I replied immediately!

Guess what came over the weekend? My big box of Cadburys Magical Elves chocolate bars.. Well, I couldn’t eat them all myself (well I could, but its not going to help the diet is it?) so I took them all into work on Monday morning to spread a little Christmas cheer.

So, a big thank you to Appliances Online, you made several departments happier on Monday morning (including my lovely assistant Laura – pictured) and made a few colleagues re-live their youth with the hidden magical popping candy.

You might want to leave a comment on this blog, just in case! It never did me any harm!

Kor-blimey!

Look what arrived this evening…….

A month or so back I entered a competition over on The Sewing Directory and I was absolutely delighted to be chosen as one of the lucky winners. This is a fabulous sewing kit from the very generous Korbond and I am over the moon! There’s a pair of dressmaking scissors, a pair of pinking shears, a sewing machine repair kit, a packet of metal bobbins, several packets of pins and needles, a tape measure, tailors chalk and 6 spools of extra strong thread in various colours.

The Sewing Directory is a brilliant website where keen stitchers like myself can find allsorts; sewing services, supplies, advice, competitions and more. It’s run by the very friendly and helpful Fiona who will always go the ‘extra mile’ to help. Why not pop over there and have a look?

Once again, thanks The Sewing Directory and Korbond.
What a fantastic early Christmas pressie!
