Fab break, crap weekend!!

Just a quick catch up..it’s been quite a week!

Last Monday we went over to see our friend and her little boy Harry and gave them the quilt I had made for him. They seemed to love it and said it would go in his cot that night as I had already washed it so that was very pleasing.

Tuesday I had to go to hospital for a scan on my abdomen due to the pains I was having a while back. Turns out the pains I had were in my bowel and are related to my IBS which I found extremely strange as the pains would come and go at very random times not related to eating or digestion so I have no idea what they were but they seem to have gone now. But whilst I was being scanned the lovely lady who reassured me not to be so nervous had a look at my ovaries as the doc originally thought I had an ovarian cyst and maybe that was the pain I was experiencing. Well, no but polysystic ovaries were….I’m absolutely gutted! It still needs to be confirmed by the doctor but definately wasnt expecting that. Whilst I was there I had another blood test for the under-active thryoid condition and I managed to pull the phlebotomist…not intentionally though! He was struggling at getting blood out of one arm so was taking his time and the other phlebotomist came over to me and asked me what i’d done to him? I was confused and said ‘what do you mean?’ and she said ‘he’s smiling his head off there so you must be doing something right’ ha ha! He made a terrible morning quite amusing!

Wednesday, Thursday & Friday – spent in London. Fantastic trip taking in the sights of the big smoke. Met up with my brother-in-law and his partner for dinner at Prezzo which was lovely. Met up with my friend Becky who has relocated down there from the Midlands for lunch. It was good to see her as we’ve had a rocky relationship of late and it was good to catch up and see her. Whilst we were milling around, we came across the Monument and in a moment of madness I said to hubby “lets go up I bet the views are amazing!”……. So, we both set off up the 300 odd steps to the top..Well, I got to about 275 steps and I began to have an almighty panic attack, came out of no where and totally out of character I kept imagining the steps falling down around me and the ceiling caving in. It was horrible! So I quickly ran back down the steps in a cold sweat I couldn’t stop shaking! Never ever again.. We managed to hit the shops all within budget (apart from the Cath Kidston shop…ooops!) and we were really impressed with the hotel.

We also managed to head over to the new Olympics development and we were really impressed. There’s something called the viewtube which is a big hut, shelter and viewing platform and they’ve explained what each part of the development is and what building is going to be. The stadium is looking very impressive so far so London 2012 Olympics should be ace.

We got home late Friday and was absolutely knackered but we’d had a fab break so it was all worth it. Saturday I woke up and my legs were killing me. I couldn’t walk. If we were having a lazy day I would of stayed in bed but we had a wedding to go to so I managed to get dressed and hobbled down stairs! I couldnt stand on my legs at all, it felt like I’d ripped the calf muscles apart, I cant tell you how painful it was! Anyway the wedding was lovely but by about 7pm I was in agony with my legs and my throat had swollen up as my tonsils had decided that they wanted some attention! Cue a taxi home, tears and an early night. So to cut a very boring story short I have managed to get tonsilitis and 2 pulled calf muscles! Over done it, yes I have! What a week…Back to work tomorrow though, had to have the day off sick today. No voice and razor blades in throat is not a healthy work combination but after a trip to the NHS walk in centre on Sunday I have antibiotics and muscle rub! Here’s hoping for an uneventful start to the new term and the commencement of willpower for the diet! Wish me luck…….

Lazy but productive weekend

I love lazy weekends. This weekend was quiet, there was no shopping to do, no nephew to look after, just washing and the usual housework. So, I crammed all the housework in on Saturday morning and spent the rest of the weekend sewing. I made a make up bag and tissue holder for my Mum to give to her friend, I tried my hand at a couple of fabric storage boxes (they came out really terrible so need to find a new pattern and strong interfacing) and as my sewing machine would now be on show, I wanted to make a new cover as the one that it came with was a bit old fashioned. So in true MrsShilts style I made a cover out of remnants I’ve been keeping and I really like it.

I had to insert a little piece into the side as it fit when I had finished sewing it together but I think it looks ok. I really like it and I think its quite in-keeping with all my other makes..

 I’m visiting Baby Harry tomorrow to give him his quilt I made so I hope they like it

Getting somewhere…

Yesterday I had the delights of going to the doctors surgery.. I was the first appointment of the day and my doctor was still running late. Haven’t seen ‘my’ particular doctor for at least a year as he’s been off sick! Doesnt give me much hope does it! Anyway, I went to see him for some blood test results I had done on the back of my period going awol. Well, the fabulous news is that all my baby making hormones seem to be working well, which I am sooo pleased about. The not so great news is that it looks like I have inherited the under-active thryoid condition that my Mom and my Nan have. I’ve had tests in the past which have always been borderline but these tests seem to suggest that my thryoid isn’t acting as it should. Another blood test scheduled for next week and another in November before I’m ‘officially’ diagnosed but I just feel relieved that finally we are getting somewhere and there may be a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel. Doctor also reckons it could explain why I struggle to lose weight and why sometimes my moods are a bit changeable. So not only did I inherit the ‘Oswald‘ backside from my Great-great Grandmother, it seems I may have also inherited that too!

I’ve got another week off coming up so I have lots planned including a 3 day trip to London with hubby to see the sights and meet up with my brother-in-law. We don’t get to see him as much as we’d like so we’re taking every opportunity whilst we’re down there to spend time with him. I can’t wait. My top 3 must see places are;

1) Buckingham Palace
2) Harrods
3) Westminster and Big Ben up close

I also really want to go to the Cath Kidston store as well but I can’t see me coming out empty handed either..sorry hubby!

Anyway, just a quick glimpse at what I’ve been doing for the last 5 hours.
Meet my gorgeous little mascot Owly*;

I’ve wanted to make her for a while now and finally got round to buying up some felt to make her. I hope you’ll agree she’s brill. I love her! Might even make a boy owl for her to keep her company…
*Owly is a crap name for such a beaut so I feel a giveaway/competition may be upon us shortly.
xx

Childhood memories…

Thinking back to my childhood, it makes me smile. I had a fantastic upbringing with two loving parents, a love-hate relationship with my little sister and loads of friends at school. According to my Mom, I always quite confident in my abilities at school and this photograph reminds me of this when I’m having a ‘self-doubting’ moment. This photograph dates back to late 1989 (I think!) and my school had put on the annual Christmas play and that year it was ‘The Nutcracker’. From what I can remember and what I have been told, there were auditions for the main parts and little ‘ol me managed to bag the lead female role of Klara. For the life of me, I have absolutely no idea how I did it or what even possessed me to stand up in front of hundreds of people and sing, dance and act on stage but i did! It’s something I’d never ever do now. I guess when we’re older we become more self-conscious or even embarrased about the slightest thing that might show us up or think we might let ourselves down by not being ‘perfect’ so this photograph reminds me that little EC used to be a confident, care-free little girl (who didn’t own a pair of hair straightners) and also reminds me that even if I do show make a mistake or show myself up, i’m only human! I love memories like this..

Back to reality..

I’m back! What a fantastic glamping holiday. We had beautiful weather, a fantastic campsite, gorgeous beaches, no television, very little mobile network signal so no phone calls or texts (which can’t be a bad thing) and no internet. Total relaxation = perfect.

Just a couple of piccies to share..

Cromer  watching the sunset…

The gorgeous sandy beach at Horsey Gap

I am in love with Norfolk now, the coastline there is absolutely beautiful but unfortunately is being destroyed by coastal erosion. The sea defences are no longer working and the land is giving way to the sea. Again, you should never under estimate the power of Mother Nature…

Our glamping holiday was fab, the tent was marvellous, the facilities at the site were excellent (fantastic powerful hot showers and free use of a hairdryer) and you really can’t fail to eat healthily with all the farm shops dotted around selling the most amazing meat, fruit and veg I’ve ever tasted. I just wish there were more shops like that here in the West Midlands.

I’ve also had a lot of time to think (insert hubby saying “uh oh!”) and I’ve realised I’m spending far too much time on the pc and not enough time on me (hubby and doggy included) so I’m going to look at getting my ass back to the gym, do more sewing (I’ve seen loads of beauties I want to try out) and get more active.. I know I’ve said it before but I really need to get my ass into gear and get this weight off, its becoming more and more depressing and I can feel myself disliking the reflection in the mirror.. eugh!

Until next time, t-ra!
